Sydney Cable Tunnel Network, Telstra Australia
Tunnel Lighting System
Telstra is Australia's largest telecommunications provider with
infrastructure covering the entire continent. In the city of Sydney
a major part of this infrastructure is provided underground below
the streets of Australia's largest city. The Sydney Cable Tunnel
Network covers tens of kilometres linking the city's telephone
exchanges and provides the communications link between millions of
businesses.
Around 70% of the tunnels is more than a century old. In order to
keep everything in working order maintenance staff require safe
access and guaranteed lighting to perform their duties. The tunnel
network is lit with weatherproof T5 fluorescent fittings from Thorn
Lighting. All fittings are driven by a TridonicAtco PCA Excel
one4all DALI ballast and every 10th fitting includes a DALI
Emergency Inverter.
Distributed Monitoring and Control
The lighting is monitored and controlled using distributed
control boxes from Monitor Software. The control boxes contain TM2600-DALI
Line Controllers to manage 500m of tunnel lighting. Every
fitting is monitored for ballast status, lamp status and lamp hours.
Emergency fittings are monitored for inverter status and battery
charge level. Discharge tests and initiated and reported through the
DALI CONTROL system.
Overall management of the lighting system takes place from an
exchange building providing full operator control and integration
with the tunnel zone alarm system. The TUNNEL MONITOR program
displays a view of the tunnel system with control options for each
zone. Status reports showing fitting location are provided to keep
the system is full working order.

The combination of DALI lighting, emergencies and DALI CONTROL
Line Controllers provides the complete tunnel lighting system that
is easy to install, commission and maintain.
